State Silk Museum

The State Silk Museum, founded by the visionary natural scientist Nikolai Shavrov, is one of the oldest silk museums in the world and a hidden gem in Tbilisi. Housed in a striking building designed by Polish architect Alexander Shimkevich in 1887, the museum is a recognized cultural heritage monument that invites visitors to explore the fascinating world of silk and sericulture.
Unlike typical silk museums that focus solely on silk collections, the State Silk Museum offers a comprehensive exhibition that spans the entire silk production process. The museum features an impressive and diverse collection of over 5,000 cocoons from various origins, providing insights into the silkworm's biology and lifecycle. Guests can also discover an array of specialized containers used for silkworms and their eggs, as well as exquisite textiles handcrafted in the Caucasus during the 19th century.
A standout attraction is the museum's collection of lace from Germany, boasting approximately 400 intricate patterns. Visitors can marvel at the vibrant colors of natural and chemical dyes sourced from 16 different countries, showcasing the rich palette used in silk production. The museum even includes a captivating butterfly collection, featuring 314 specimens from 161 species, highlighting the interconnectedness of nature and silk.
The State Silk Museum is also home to a unique library housing rare books on natural sciences, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, written in various languages, including Russian, English, German, French, and more. The authentic museum and library furniture, crafted according to Shimkevich’s original sketches, adds to the museum's charm and historical significance.
Whether you're a silk enthusiast, a history buff, or simply curious about this ancient craft, the State Silk Museum offers a captivating experience that highlights the art and science of silk-making, making it a must-visit destination in Tbilisi.
