Narikala Fortress

Rising majestically above Tbilisi’s historic old city, Narikala Fortress is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a testament to its long and layered history. Perched on a steep hill between the botanical gardens and the Mtkvari River, the fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of Tbilisi, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors.
Originally built in the 4th century as a Persian citadel, Narikala has undergone numerous expansions and reconstructions over the centuries, reflecting the diverse cultures that have influenced the region. The fortress played a vital role in protecting Tbilisi from invasions and remains a symbol of the city's resilience.
Visitors can explore the fortress’s remaining walls and towers, which evoke the grandeur of its past. Within the complex lies St. Nicholas Church, a modern reconstruction of a medieval church that was destroyed by fire. The interior of the church features vivid frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible and Georgian history.
Reaching Narikala is part of the adventure. Many visitors take the cable car from Rike Park for a scenic ride, while others enjoy the invigorating hike up the hillside trails. The area surrounding the fortress is equally captivating, with lush greenery, the Tbilisi Botanical Garden, and charming narrow streets filled with cafes and shops.
A visit to Narikala Fortress offers not only a journey through history but also a chance to witness the enduring beauty and spirit of Tbilisi from above.
