Ikalto Monastery and Academy

Tucked away in the verdant hills of Kakheti, Ikalto is a historic village and monastery complex that holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Georgia. Located near the town of Telavi, Ikalto is best known for its ancient monastic school, which once attracted students from across the region and beyond.
The Ikalto Monastery was founded in the 6th century and flourished during the medieval period, becoming a prominent center of education, art, and religion. An academy was founded at the monastery during king David the Builder by Arsen Ikaltoeli an advisor to David IV, in 1106. The Academy of Ikalto trained its students in theology, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, arithmetic, music, grammar, chanting but also more practical skills such as pottery making, metal work, viticulture and wine making and pharmacology. According to a legend the famous 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli studied there. Visitors can explore the ruins of the old academy, which was home to some of Georgia’s most notable scholars and theologians.
The monastery complex includes a bell tower, a wine cellar, and the remains of a fortified wall, reflecting its once-vibrant role as both a religious and academic hub. Ikalto’s peaceful setting, surrounded by lush vineyards and rolling hills, makes it a perfect spot for a quiet walk or meditation.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Ikalto is its deep connection to Georgia’s winemaking traditions. The village is renowned for its vineyards, where the art of winemaking has been passed down for generations.
For history buffs, wine lovers, and those seeking a serene escape, Ikalto offers a perfect blend of spiritual, historical, and natural beauty. A visit here is a journey through time in one of Georgia’s most fascinating cultural landscapes.
