Khobi Monastery, located in Samegrelo region – Khobi Municipality, is a historic treasure that reflects centuries of spiritual devotion and architectural splendor. Built in the 13th–14th centuries, this monastic complex served as an important religious and cultural center during the medieval period, linked closely to the powerful Dadiani family who ruled the region.
The monastery’s centerpiece is its beautiful Church of the Virgin Mary, known for its elegant proportions and intricate stone carvings. The facade is adorned with detailed reliefs that depict religious and floral motifs, showcasing the skill of medieval Georgian artisans. Inside, remnants of frescoes provide a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual traditions of the time.
The Khobi Monastery was also renowned for its scriptorium, where manuscripts were copied and illuminated, preserving Georgian literary and religious heritage. Some of these manuscripts are now housed in museums, highlighting the monastery's historical significance.
